Beloved author

For many years, a creative writing group has been run in Helsingin Työväenopisto by Sari Pauloma. The group creates an opportunity for aspiring authors to practice writing in a supportive environment, and discussions often cover books and literature in general.

While critics and authors can often agree on certain elements that make a book great, there is no one answer for what leaves a mark on readers’ hearts. That’s where two regular attendees of the writing group, Ernesta and Steve, came up with the idea to launch a podcast called “Beloved Author”, interviewing literature enthusiasts and superfans about what makes their favorite book or author special to them. The style is deliberately relaxed and conversational.

For their first episode, they interview Sari about what makes James Joyce’s work take the tender spot in her heart, and further commentary on the intricacies of his work. As a scholar of Joyce, her insights were fascinating. 

Other episodes feature author Michael Ritchie about Agatha Christie and his unusual way of expressing his admiration to her; John Stotesbury, a retired professor from the University of Eastern Finland, sharing his perspective on the Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee; and Tiina Aliranta, a passionate reader and Instagram book reviewer, discussing an unusual book by Bea Uusma, which more resembles a well-documented journal than a traditional non-fiction book.

This year, the podcast is about to kick off with a new season, with Alex Call, a bookseller from Swindon, as the first guest, talking about Sarah Winman’s “Tin Man”. Both Ernesta and Steve are incredibly excited for the episode and invite you to listen along and hear an echo of a heartbeat marked by Winman’s work.
